Bought this for Goldrush the game and haven't tried it on machine world but not sure if it would work you have to configure for Arma 3 I bought 2 for dual joysticks, wouldn't recommend this try the 75$ ones that are white apparently they are better for it, but im not sure, otherwise if your looking for retro gaming I'm sure this will work fine works on windows 10 and these say on the box that they are compatible for windows 98SE to windows me to Windows XP, nice joystick though really wish it could run dual, but its okay. I grabbed this to learn on to see if I like Joystick flying vs Keyboard/mouse/controller and this is a PERFECT beginner stick. I still can't outmaneuver (BFV) the enemy but it's helping and it seems to have enough buttons for me and all the in-game gadgets. Nice weight to it, throttle works great.
CONS You cannot twist the joystick left or right/spin (Awe?) so keep that in mind, I mapped it to the view button. Mine makes a weird sound if I maneuver the joystick in a complete circle. Not a huge issue as it doesn't impact performance. For what it is, it's simultaneously fantastic and for almost a decade was in a league of it's own. It's a hyper-reliable, rugged, entry level joystick. For a decade this was the only game in town if you wanted a sub-150 dollar flight stick, because the higher end of the market ignored that price point, and the companies that were in it did a consistently awful job (Saitek and CH especially, don't ever buy one of their sticks, they're infamous for having major problems). Since I started playing computer games almost 2 decades ago I've had a grand total of two of these, that's unprecedented in peripherals both for software support and hardware durability/relevancy.
My current one is almost 7 years old, my old one finally broke when it was thrown against a wall (something the manufacturer probably didn't anticipate). These things are basically unbreakable, and at the price point. I bought this joystick to play with Kerbal Space Program on my oldish Macbook Pro. Like another reviewer, I was disappointed that the fourth axis wasn't rudder control accessible by rotating the stick.
However, by mapping the hat as my third axis, I was able to get a far better control system than the keyboard provided. Software-wise, it works fantastic. I literally plugged it in, turned on KSP, and mapped the buttons.
No drivers, no software configuration, just pulled up the Kerbal settings and mapped the joystick's by pressing buttons. Given the way certain control systems work on the Mac (i.e.
The XBox Wireless controller), this convenience was a relief. Hardware-wise the controls are responsive, with relatively little give. The stick is new, though, so I may update this review if it degrades with use. I purchased this bad boy because I recently was gifted the game Elite Dangerous. I wanted a HOTAS styled setup, and this seemed to be a great middleground for price and flexability.
My only major worry was the size. I have large hands, and most things tend to feel small in them. My gaming mouse is a bit small, my keybaord feels a bit small, hell my Logitech controller feels small. However, this thing is the perfect size.
Technically, the throttle component feels a tad too big sometimes! It was super easy setup, just literally plug and play. The fact that I can connect the two halves makes storage easy (I have a little side table I sit things like this on next to my PC) and the cable between the halves, while a tad short for my liking, is still long enough to get everything.
I've been using game controllers for decades now so I tend to be a bit picky sometimes. That said, this HOTAS is an excellent option, especially considering the price point. It's perfect for Elite Dangerous, the game I use it for currently, and works very well for me. As of this review I've been using it for a month now and it's been consistently performing without glitches or any trouble at all.
I picked this HOTAS up because I was tired of the issues I'd had with my X55 and X56. Logitech's support was excellent but I would rather have fewer buttons and fewer issues than the risk of issues I'd been dealing with persisting.
My plan is to use the Thrustmaster one while saving up for one of the almost absurdly expensive options but since that's probably more than a year away at best, this. I absolutely love this joystick. It's extremely accurate, well built, versatile, and great looking. I've had this joystick for over a year and it's still working great. The roll and pitch axis do wonders in combat simulators and the yaw is very accurate and easy to control. The hat switch is also a nice addition and at the same time conveniently located.
Pros: -Great design; sturdy and rigid -Palm and thumb rest -Accurate handling; great for combat sims -You can change the joystick's resistance -Ergonomic hand design for RIGHT-HANDED ONLY. Left-handed fliers beware, you can't hold this well with your left hand.Good variety of buttons -Good upper and lower fire button (great for shooting lower and higher caliber armament separately) -Nice array of lower buttons -'Throttle' is easy to control with 50% click Cons: -Not for left-handed people (I'm right-handed but I know lefties will suffer if they use this) -'Throttle' not so accurate -Only. Using for elite dangerous, the feel is great.
As for the pinky switch problem; its fixable! With the software -update latest driver- 1. Just go to the profile editor (right click on system tray icon) 2.
Delete all default profiles 3. Create a new profile 4. Set the pinkie switch to unprogrammed 5. Go to the saitek control pannel (right click on system tray icon), on the MDF tab / uncheck (enable clutch mode) 6.
Go to the system tray icon, right click and select your profile, icon should be highlighted in green. All keys should be bindable. I ordered a pair of the black SNES style controllers and returned them because of the poor quality. I was contacted by the seller and offered the new and improved model. They sent me one to test for free. I was surprised, these are nothing like the older units. The button presses are not mushy, they nice and tight.
The buttons and d-pad do not rattle when you shake the unit. I have a couple hours of Mario, punch out, and various other games played on it and it's held up nicely. This new model rivals the quality of the Ibuffalo. If you are considering a budget Retropie build this is the controller to buy. I have owned four or five of these (Saitek ST290 Pro) over the past three years. I love the stick for its ease of use, no doubt about it. My only complaint about this stick is the way the trigger is attached to the stick.
![]()
The trigger has plastic hooks that grab a rod, holding the trigger in place. However, these hooks are rather weak and thin, and after numerous trigger pulls they weaken and break, and the next thing you know. BAM, your trigger flies off. This has happened to every one of these that I have owned.
Once I went to great lengths to repair the trigger, affixing it with a little loop of 12-gauge electrical wire (which worked for some time) but the trigger wobbled during that time and always felt a bit weird. I am not a crazy trigger-puller or anything like that.
